Hair transplant: how to choose between the FUE and DHI methods
Two methods, different results. Hair density, recovery time, price and which hair type each suits — a full comparison.
Medically reviewed by Op. Dr. Elvin Əliyev.
In 2026 hair transplantation is a procedure chosen in Azerbaijan by visiting patients from abroad as well. There are two main methods.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
How does it work? Hair follicles are extracted one by one from the back of the head with a special micro instrument, and are then placed in the front zone.
Advantages:
- 4000+ grafts are possible
- Use of a wider donor bank
- Usually cheaper than DHI
Disadvantages:
- Lower density (around 30-40 grafts per cm²)
- Opening the channels takes more time
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)
How does it work? With a Choi pen the follicles are placed directly where they belong as soon as they are extracted — with no separate channel.
Advantages:
- Higher density (50-60 grafts/cm²)
- Placement between existing hairs is possible (it thickens the hair you still have)
- Shorter recovery
Disadvantages:
- A limit of 2500-3000 grafts
- More expensive
Which one is for you?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Complete baldness, a wide zone | FUE |
| Thickening while preserving existing hair | DHI |
| Beard or eyebrows | DHI |
| A poor donor bank | FUE (maximum grafts) |
About the price
FUE is usually cheaper than DHI because the process takes less time; DHI costs more because of the extra equipment and time involved. The exact price depends on the number of grafts and the clinic, and is set only at a consultation.
