Comparison
Open vs Closed rhinoplasty: what is the difference?
There are two main surgical approaches in rhinoplasty. The difference lies in the location of the incision: in the closed technique all incisions are made inside the nose, while in the open technique a small additional incision is made on the columella. Both can give a natural result in experienced hands.
Which one suits you?
If a complex structural change or revision is needed, the open technique may be preferable. For lighter corrections, the closed technique is sufficient. The choice depends on the anatomy of the nose and is determined at consultation.
| Open | Closed | |
|---|---|---|
| Incision | Small external incision on the columella | Only inside the nose |
| External scar | Very faint, fades over time | None |
| Surgeon's visibility | Wide, direct view | Limited |
| Suitable cases | Complex/revision changes | Lighter changes |
| Swelling | Can be somewhat greater | Relatively less |
