About this procedure

Surgical removal of sagging skin and excess tissue on the thighs, particularly the inner thigh. It restores the leg contour and reduces the discomfort caused by chafing.

Who is it for?

Suitable

  • People left with noticeable inner thigh skin sagging after major weight loss (following a long-term diet or bariatric surgery)
  • Patients who experience redness, rash, sores, or hygiene difficulties because the skin on the inner thighs rubs together
  • Candidates whose weight has remained stable for at least 6-12 months and who are not planning any significant weight change in the near future
  • People for whom liposuction alone is not enough because skin elasticity has weakened, and who need the excess skin itself to be removed
  • Patients with realistic expectations of the outcome — accepting a smoother contour in exchange for a scar on the inner thigh
  • Non-smokers, or those willing to quit before surgery, whose general health is suitable for a surgical procedure

May not be suitable

  • People still in the process of losing weight or planning significant weight loss in the near future — the result is longer-lasting at a stable weight
  • Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy in the near future
  • Patients with a bleeding disorder or who cannot stop blood-thinning medications before surgery
  • People with uncontrolled chronic illnesses (unregulated diabetes, severe cardiovascular disease) or conditions that impair wound healing
  • Patients with an active skin infection, fungal condition, or rash in the thigh area — treatment is required first
  • People with lymphedema of the legs or severe venous insufficiency — these conditions require a separate vascular assessment
  • Candidates who cannot accept the possibility of a visible scar on the inner thigh and expect a completely scar-free result

Suitability is confirmed only at a doctor's examination. Results are individual.

The process step by step

Anesthesia: General anesthesia · 2-3 hours (depending on the extent of the surgery)
  1. 1

    Initial consultation and assessment(40-60 minutes)

The plastic surgeon evaluates the patient's weight history, the degree of thigh sagging, and skin elasticity. Whether the surgery will use only a groin incision or a vertically extended inner thigh lift is discussed, and the placement and visibility of the scar are explained openly.

  2. 2

    Tests and pre-operative preparation(1-2 days)

Blood tests and a general health assessment for anesthesia are carried out. In patients who have had bariatric surgery, protein and vitamin levels are checked separately so that wound healing proceeds normally. Instructions are given regarding smoking and blood-thinning medications.

  3. 3

    Surgical planning and marking(1 session)

The incision lines are marked while the patient is standing — the amount of excess skin appears more realistic in this position. Whether liposuction will be added and the area of tissue to be removed are finalized.

  4. 4

    Anesthesia(15-20 minutes)

General anesthesia is administered in the operating room by the anesthesiologist; the patient remains asleep and pain-free throughout the entire procedure.

  5. 5

    Surgery(2-3 hours)

Excess skin and fat tissue are removed; when needed, volume is first reduced with liposuction. The tissues are tightened into the new contour and sutured in layers, in some cases a drain is placed and a compression garment is fitted.

  6. 6

    Initial recovery and observation(24-48 hours)

The patient usually stays in the clinic under observation for one night. Early light walking is encouraged to reduce the risk of thrombosis, and a medication regimen is prescribed for pain and swelling.

Recovery process

Week 1

Swelling on the inner thigh, blue-purple bruising, and a pulling sensation when walking are most pronounced during this period. If a drain was placed, it is removed within the first days. Short, light walks are recommended from the first day to reduce the risk of thrombosis.

Restriction: Lifting heavy objects, taking wide strides, and movements that stretch the inner thigh are limited. Keeping the incision line dry and clean and wearing the compression garment continuously are essential.

Weeks 2-3

Swelling gradually subsides and daily movements become more comfortable. By the end of this period, most patients can return to a desk-based work routine. The incision line still looks red, but healing speeds up.

Restriction: Sports, pool/sea, sauna, and standing for long periods are still not advised. The compression garment continues.

Weeks 4-6

Most of the swelling resolves and the new thigh contour begins to show clearly. A gradual return to light physical activity becomes possible, and the compression garment is usually discontinued by the end of this period.

Restriction: Doctor's clearance is awaited for running, squatting, and intensive exercises that strain the inner thigh — usually after 6-8 weeks.

3-12 months

The scar matures from a red-pink phase toward a pale line — this process can continue for up to 12-18 months. Residual swelling fully resolves and the final leg contour emerges during this period. Scar care (silicone gel/tape) may be applied on the doctor's recommendation.

Restriction: No special restrictions; protecting the scar from the sun improves fading.

Risks and transparency

Every surgical procedure carries risks. Transparency is the basis of trust for us.

  • Seroma (fluid accumulation under the skin) — relatively common in thigh lift surgery, sometimes requiring needle drainage or a drain
  • Wound healing problems and partial opening of the incision line — because the groin area is moist and constantly in motion, this risk is higher than in other areas
  • Widening, thickening, or migration of the scar due to tension — the inner thigh skin is sensitive to tension and scar quality varies individually
  • Prolonged swelling in the legs and changes in lymphatic flow — usually temporary, but in some cases it can persist for months
  • Temporary sensory changes on the inner thigh (numbness, tingling)
  • Risk of bleeding or infection (a possibility present in any surgical operation)
  • Risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and embolism — reduced through early walking and compression, assessed individually during the consultation
  • Asymmetry, contour irregularity, or residual sagging — with large amounts of excess skin, a corrective (revision) procedure may sometimes be needed
  • General risks associated with anesthesia (standard possibilities present in any general anesthesia)
What does the price depend on?
  • The chosen technique — a groin incision only or a vertically extended inner thigh lift
  • The amount of excess skin and the planned duration of the operation
  • Whether liposuction is added to the operation
  • Type of anesthesia and length of stay at the clinic
  • Clinic equipment and observation conditions
  • Surgeon's experience and whether the surgery is primary or revision

Frequently asked questions

How much does a thigh lift cost, and what does the price depend on?

The price varies depending on the chosen technique (a groin incision only or a vertically extended inner thigh lift), the amount of excess skin, whether liposuction is added, and the clinic. An exact price can only be given after an in-person consultation and examination — you can book a free consultation for this.

Is a thigh lift painful?

Since the operation is performed under general anesthesia, no pain is felt during the procedure. In the first days there is tightness on the inner thigh and a pulling sensation when walking — this is managed with prescribed pain medication and decreases noticeably within the first week.

Does a thigh lift leave a scar, and where is the scar located?

Yes, a thigh lift is not possible without a scar — it is important to be open about this. With mild to moderate excess skin, the incision is placed in the groin crease and covered by underwear. When there is a large amount of excess skin after major weight loss, the incision continues vertically along the inner thigh, and this scar may be visible in clothing that leaves the legs exposed. The scar is red in the first months and fades over 12-18 months, but it does not disappear completely.

When can I return to work after the operation?

A return to desk-based work that does not require physical effort is usually possible within 2-3 weeks. For jobs that involve standing for long periods or lifting heavy objects, waiting 4-6 weeks is recommended.

Can thigh sagging be corrected with exercise alone?

Exercise strengthens the thigh muscles and can reduce fat tissue, but it cannot retract excess skin that has lost its elasticity. Thigh sagging that remains after major weight loss, in particular, can only be corrected surgically — by removing the excess skin.

What is the difference between an inner thigh lift and liposuction?

Liposuction reduces fat tissue and may be sufficient on its own in patients with good skin elasticity. An inner thigh lift, on the other hand, removes the excess, sagging skin itself. When skin elasticity is poor, liposuction alone can make the sagging even more prominent — in that case, the two methods are often combined in the same operation.

From what age can a thigh lift be performed?

The operation is performed in people over 18 whose weight has stabilized. More than age, the condition of the skin, general health, and weight stability are decisive — the decision is always based on an individual examination.

When can a thigh lift be done after major weight loss?

The weight is expected to remain stable for at least 6-12 months — if weight is still dropping, the result can be compromised within a short time. In patients who have had bariatric surgery, nutritional indicators (protein and vitamin levels) are additionally checked so that wound healing proceeds normally.

How many years does the result of a thigh lift last?

Because the removed excess skin does not come back, the result is long-lasting as long as weight remains stable. That said, significant weight changes, pregnancy, and natural aging can alter skin tone again over the years — which is why a stable lifestyle is the key factor in maintaining the result.

Can a thigh lift be performed at the same time as abdominoplasty?

In some patients, a thigh lift can be performed within the same surgical plan as an abdominoplasty or arm lift, but because the operation time and recovery burden increase, this decision is made individually based on overall health. After major weight loss, body contouring is often planned in stages.

When can I return to sports after the operation?

Light walking is recommended from the first days — it also reduces the risk of thrombosis. For active sports, running, and movements that stretch and strain the inner thigh (squatting, wide strides), a wait of 6-8 weeks is usually needed; the exact timing is determined under the doctor's supervision.

How long is the compression garment worn after a thigh lift?

The compression garment reduces swelling and helps the tissues settle into the new contour. It is usually worn for 4-6 weeks, following the regimen recommended by the doctor.

How does a thigh lift affect leg aesthetics?

The operation removes the sagging on the inner thigh, making the leg contour smoother and more proportionate, and making clothing choices and freedom of movement easier. That said, expectations should be realistic: a thigh lift does not rebuild the overall shape of the leg — it frees the existing structure from excess skin.
