Non-surgical facial rejuvenation: which method suits which problem?
Botox, fillers, mesotherapy, PRP, skin tightening and chemical peels — what each non-surgical option does, who it suits and where its limits lie.
Medically reviewed by Op. Dr. Elvin Əliyev.
Not every patient is ready for surgery — because of time, budget or simply a wish to change gradually, many people choose non-surgical methods. These methods are not a substitute for surgery, but chosen correctly they can give a real, visible result.
Botox — for dynamic wrinkles
Botulinum toxin temporarily weakens muscle movement and so softens the wrinkles created by repeated movements such as smiling or raising the brows (the forehead, around the eyes, between the brows). Its effect on static wrinkles — those visible in the skin itself even at rest — is limited. The effect usually lasts a few months, after which a repeat session is needed.
Filler (hyaluronic acid) — for volume loss
With age, volume is lost around the cheeks, the temples and the mouth. Hyaluronic acid based fillers fill that void and restore the contour of the face. The result is visible immediately, but it is not permanent, because the body gradually metabolises the material.
Mesotherapy — for skin quality
This is the delivery of vitamins, hyaluronic acid and other active substances into the upper layers of the skin through small injections. The aim is not to add volume but to improve the skin's overall tone, hydration and glow. It is usually applied as a course of several sessions.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma)
Platelet-rich plasma separated from the patient's own blood is injected into the skin with the aim of supporting the natural processes of repair. Because the patient's own tissue is used, the risk of an allergic reaction is low, but the result appears gradually, over several sessions.
Skin tightening (Ulthera, RF technologies)
Ultrasound (Ulthera) or radiofrequency (RF) energy stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin and creates a gradual tightening effect. No surgical incision is required, but:
- The result is softer and more limited than a surgical facelift
- The effect appears gradually, over several months
- A repeat session is usually considered at around 12 months
Chemical peels
A peel exfoliates the upper layer of the skin in a controlled way and encourages a new layer of more even texture to come through. There are different levels according to depth: superficial peels need little recovery time, while deep peels give a stronger result but demand a longer recovery.
A brief comparison of the methods
| Method | Main target | Recovery time | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botox | Dynamic wrinkles | None/minimal | A few months |
| Filler | Volume loss | Short | Months to years (by type) |
| Mesotherapy | Skin tone | None | Needs a course |
| PRP | General repair | Short | Needs a course |
| Ulthera/RF | Skin firmness | Short | Months |
| Chemical peel | Skin texture | Varies by level | Needs a course |
The limits of non-surgical methods
These methods are effective for early signs of ageing and moderate changes. But where there is significant skin laxity (along the jawline or on the neck, for example) or deep structural change, non-surgical methods give a limited result — in those cases a surgical facelift or other surgical options may be more suitable. During the consultation the doctor should assess realistically which category you fall into.
Who is it suitable for?
- Those not yet ready for surgery, or who do not want it
- Those with early signs of ageing (often the 30-45 age range)
- Those who want to change gradually, in small steps
- Those who cannot set aside recovery time and want to return to daily life at once
Conclusion
Non-surgical methods offer a broad toolbox, but each one serves a different problem — there is no "one solution for everything". Assessing the state of your skin, your signs of ageing and your expectations together at the consultation is what determines the most suitable combination.
